Malaysia - Day Trip to Johor Bahru by Bus/ Public Transport

Since moving to the north of Singapore, H & I have been visiting Johor Bahru more frequently. Instead of spending the day at the mall in Singapore, we thought of exploring and spending our time in JB.  Which was pretty fun! (Except queuing up in immigration for two hours to enter JB this time). The last time we drove in and explore Skudai area. This time round,  we  did a super last minute decision to stay in JB for a night before returning back to Singapore on Sunday morning.

To be honest, this trip was my first trip to JB from Woodland Train checkpoint. I had taken bus from Boonlay station and drove in but not this. Thus, I was pretty excited when J told me we can take a taxi to Woodland Train checkpoint and walk over to the Woodland checkpoint. You can actually book a train ticket the day before to avoid the crowd. Anyway, I was stoked! Yay to more good food and massage. Here’s what we did:

Getting around in JB without driving
Upon arrival at the Woodland Train checkpoint, we followed the signage and reach Woodland checkpoint. After Singapore immigration, we purchase bus ticket (1rm/pax or 1.50rm/pax) to cross the custom and reach Johor checkpoint. Please prepare exact or small notes
From Johor Checkpoint, one can walk over to City square or even to the café we went. Once you had found your way or with the free Wifi access, you can book your private hire car - Grab! These private car hire has change the transportation game in Malaysia. I still remember we were quoted 15rm for a 5 min drive (it was raining that day)

Flower in the Window - Cafe
First stop, we visited flower in the window. About 15 min walk away from city square, we found it! Situated along the streets of cafe, flower in the window stood out. In fact, i have been wanting to visit this cafe since last year or was it 2 years ago? I think we were too late because the flowers had all dry when we were there. There were no fresh flowers. Nonetheless, the cafe is beautifully designed with many plants and dried flower. It is like a garden in the window. It felt cosy. Plus the natural sunlight shining in gave us more reason to snap.
I ordered the Japanese seafood which consist of sashimi salmon, crab stick, avocado, pickles and rice. What surprised me was the rice. They had shape it like a burger and probably grilled it cause the rice had the “Guo ba” taste. Unfortunately, the salmon was a little too cold and tasteless. The colour of salmon looks funny too.

H ordered the steak and had it medium. He find it mediocre and definitely can be better.
The steak was pair up with portobello mushroom as the side. I tried it and it taste so good! Very well-seasoned and the mushroom was juicy! Coffee was good but not fantastic. H & I fill our tummy before moving to next stop.

KSL Shopping Mall
It was almost 6pm when we reach KSL. We were too full to have our massage. Thus, we went around window shopping. We didn’t drive this time round so we didn’t get anything from the mall. KSL is popular with many Singaporeans because there is a supermarket (TESCO) and a Cinema. Even if you are not here to shop, there are countless of hair salons and manicure shops to choose from. Anyway, in short it’s the perfect place for Singaporean because the ladies can go her hair & nails. Guys can go for a massage and even a movie while waiting for the ladies. After everything, they can enjoy a nice meal in the restaurant or like us to have the Char siew rice at You Kee XO.

Thai Odyssey Massage
In case you are wondering why H & I is doing there, we wanted to go for a massage! The initial plan was to visit Thai Imperial Massage located next to KSL. However, H decides to try out Thai Odyssey. Compare to others, Thai Odyssey massage is more expensive. Thankfully it is also one of the better massage experience we had in JB. To be honest, massage skills varies between masseuse & there are some really good Thai massage in JB. The worse massage experience I ever had was with Relux Zone at Paradigm mall. (The one with a logo that looks like some ancient god) #butmostofthetimeitdependsonyourluck

Who doesn't love a good scrub? Unlike others (usually tickles), Thai Odyssey provide a good scrub before the massage. Plus, they don’t chit chat among themselves during the 60 minute session. Honestly, it gets quite annoying when they start to whisper and giggle every few minutes. Very often, the masseuse’s styles varies and sometimes they do their own style which i don't really get what are they trying to do. I remember once, I had to tell the masseuse she had forgotten to massage the left arm. Thankfully the ones at Thai Odyssey is good and felt like they had a standard SOP.

Anyway, we signed up the for 1000rm credit and get 10% off for any package in the future. Plus, there are many outlets in JB so i think it will save us a lot of travelling time. Although i still think 10% is not a lot but we still purchase it because foresee ourselves visiting JB more often.

K Fry Urban Korean Restaurant
Unfortunately, when we reach You Kee XO  for dinner, the Char siew was sold out. We left and went to K Fry Urban Korean Restaurant located at Holiday Villa (a few minutes walk away from KSL). Didn’t know it was chicken up until we were seated inside. If I had knew, I probably won’t even enter. Chicken up in Singapore is over rated and expensive.
The best seller Krazy Cheesy Fried chicken was sold out. So we had Fried Soya Chicken, Seafood Pancake and fries. The chicken was coated with soya sauce and fried to golden brown. Meat was fresh and tender! I like it and secretly hope that the size of the chicken can be bigger. Haha! Unlike the usual seafood pancake we had (n usually thin), the one at K fry Urban was thick. I didn’t really like it at first but the sauce was good. So, we managed to finished it! Fries was mediocre.

We ordered the Xtra Virgin K’ocktail because we thought it was soju. End up, it is a non-alcoholic drink. Apple flavoured malt beverage with some ice bland. Probably, taste like Jolly Shandy but without the alcohol. It tasted good but cost 19.90 rm. We saw huge size of bingsoo but was turn off by the huge portion. Perhaps next time with more people?

Overall, we like the ambience and food was pretty good. It is definitely a good choice to have your fried chicken craving fix here. Plus, no pork and lard! Might be back to try the Bingsoo. Probably will get my supper fix at somewhere else cause there are too many food spot to try in JB.

Bazar Karat Pasar Malam (Night Market)
After our late supper/ dinner, we visited Bazar Karat Pasar Malam (Night Market) at Jalan Wong Ah Fook area.  Unlike the items we saw mostly were mainly new , the term Pasar Karat actually refers to second hand items.

We went there on a Saturday night - around 10pm and finds that the night market is still very crowded. Stall ranges from fashion apparels to house hold items. You can even have your meal fix there. Unfortunately, we were too full and most of the food was not to our liking. Overall, I think it is a nice place to explore but we doubt we will be back.
