Ultimate 4-Day Phu Quoc Vietnam Itinerary: Beaches, Cable Car, Night Markets & Island Adventures

With new route flying from Singapore to Phu Quoc Vietnam, I had the opportunity to visit Phu Quoc with a group of friends for a 4 Day 3 Night Vietnam Phu Quoc trip! With its white-sand beaches, resorts, and laid-back island life, it is also one of local’s favourite destination!

1. When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?

The best time to visit Phu Quoc is during the dry season, which runs from November to April. During these months, the island experiences sunny weather, low humidity, and calm seas—perfect conditions for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports like snorkeling and kayaking. This is also the high season, so popular beaches and resorts may be more crowded, and it’s advisable to book accommodations in advance.

The rainy season, from May to October, brings heavier rainfall and occasional storms, especially between July and September. While the rain often comes in short bursts rather than all day, activities like snorkeling or boat trips may be affected. However, this is also the low season, so you’ll find fewer crowds and discounted hotel rates—ideal for travelers seeking peace and value.

While we were there in June, typhoon was hitting the northern side of Vietnam it was quite an experience!

2. Do I need a visa to visit Phu Quoc?

For many international travelers, one of the perks of visiting Phu Quoc is the 30-day visa-free entry policy, which applies to those who fly directly to the island or arrive through an international seaport. This means if you're entering Phu Quoc without traveling to mainland Vietnam, you won’t need to apply for a visa.

However, if you plan to combine your trip with visits to other parts of Vietnam (such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, or Hoi An), or if you intend to stay longer than 30 days, you’ll need to apply for a Vietnam visa in advance. Always check the most up-to-date visa rules, as policies can change depending on your nationality and travel conditions.

3. How do I get to Phu Quoc?

Phu Quoc is accessible by both air and ferry, making it easy to reach whether you’re arriving from within Vietnam or overseas.

If you’re flying, Phu Quoc International Airport (PQC) serves direct domestic flights from major cities like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang.

From It also receives international flights from cities like Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Seoul, and Taipei. Currently, only scoot and vietjet operates direct flight from Singapore to Vietnam.

If you're already in southern Vietnam, you can opt for a ferry from Ha Tien or Rach Gia, which connects the island to the mainland via a scenic sea route. The ferry ride can take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on the departure point. This is a budget-friendly option for travelers who are exploring the Mekong Delta or road-tripping through southern Vietnam.

4. What is the best way to get around Phu Quoc?

The most convenient way to explore Phu Quoc is by renting a motorbike, especially if you're confident on two wheels. Motorbikes are widely available and affordable, usually ranging from USD $5 to $10 per day, and they allow you to explore hidden beaches, local eateries, and lesser-known attractions at your own pace.

For those who prefer not to drive, taxis and Grab (a ride-hailing app similar to Uber) are reliable and widely used in main areas like Duong Dong Town, Long Beach, and An Thoi. If you're traveling with young children or in a group, private car hires or hotel shuttles are also a convenient option for full-day tours and airport transfers.

Check out the private car rates here

Do note that some areas (King Kong, drop off area at night market ) are more difficult to get a car via grab. We tried booking a grab car infront of King Kong Mart and was cancelled more than 5 times. We even notice the car that cancel us was parking right in front of us. We only got a car when we  walk down the street and change the pick up location. Thus, highly recommend you to walk to somewhere else to book.

Also some parts of the island, especially rural or less developed regions, have limited signage and lighting, so it’s best to avoid riding at night unless you're familiar with the area.

5. What currency is used in Phu Quoc?

The official currency used in Phu Quoc, as in the rest of Vietnam, is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). While US dollars may be accepted in some large hotels and tour companies, it’s generally best to carry VND, especially for paying at local markets, food stalls, or taxi fares.

ATMs are widely available in Duong Dong Town and near major resorts, though they may charge a small international withdrawal fee. If you're planning to visit more remote parts of the island, it's wise to carry cash, as card machines and ATMs may be limited.

Credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are accepted at many hotels, spas, and upscale restaurants, but smaller vendors will prefer cash—often in small denominations. Some places will have transaction fee if you choose to charge with a credit card.

6. Is Phu Quoc suitable for families?

Yes, Phu Quoc is very family-friendly and offers a wide range of activities for travelers with children. Many resorts feature kids’ clubs, swimming pools, and family suites, and the calm, shallow waters of Long Beach are perfect for young swimmers.
