Our room at The Prestige Hotel Penang.

We stayed here with Y in 2025, and those three things are what we'd choose it for again. It's in George Town's heritage zone near the harbour, 240 m from the Pinang Peranakan Mansion and under 600 m from Chew Jetty. The whole hotel is themed on stage magic, which makes it more fun than the usual city hotel.

The Magic Theme: What Makes It Different

The Prestige is themed on "the art of illusion" from the 2006 film The Prestige, about rival Victorian stage magicians. You'll notice it from the lobby, where the front desk looks as if it's balancing on chrome orbs and the gold wall fittings are styled like Houdini's escape box.

Beds are designed to look as if they're floating slightly above the floor, which is what the lit base under our bed is about. The shower and wardrobe sit inside a large golden glass enclosure. It's a playful touch if your kids like spotting things, and it's photogenic without being over the top.

Our Room: Clean and Comfortable

Our son seen from behind beside the bed in our room at The Prestige Hotel Penang

We booked an Original room, the entry-level category, for about S$150 (RM500) a night without breakfast. Clean and comfortable is exactly what we want after a long day of walking and eating in Penang, and this room delivered both. The big bed sits low on a lit base, with soft grey panelled walls and a small round table by the window.

The room comes with complimentary mini bar which comprises of local snacks!

The hotel has 162 rooms and suites across six categories, from 30 sqm rooms to two-storey loft suites, so check which one you're booking if you need extra space for kids.

Categories include Originals, Deluxe, Executive Deluxe, Deluxe Trio and the two-storey Loft Suites. If you're a family of three, look at the Deluxe Trio first, and confirm the bed set-up with the hotel before you book.

Hotel Facilities

A coffee and snack trolley at the hotel.

These are the facilities the hotel and booking sites list, so check them before you book:

  • Pool: a saltwater infinity pool on the fourth floor, overlooking the harbourfront. One booking site lists it as open from 7am to 8pm. We didn't use it on our stay, so we can't vouch for it.
  • Dining: The Glasshouse is the all-day restaurant on the ground floor, styled as a Victorian conservatory with metal lattice windows and velvet seating. It serves local and international dishes. Our rate didn't include breakfast, so check what yours includes when you book. George Town's breakfast spots, such as Tai Tong dim sum, are a short walk or ride away.
  • Other facilities: a 24-hour gym and a spa.
  • Parking: free self parking, according to booking sites.

Getting There

  • From Penang International Airport: about 30 minutes by car or Grab without traffic. The hotel doesn't run an airport shuttle, and the drive can take much longer in a jam.
  • By ferry from Butterworth: if you arrive by train at Butterworth, the ferry lands at Pangkalan Raja Tun Uda, about 300 m from the hotel.
  • By car: parking is free, which helps if you're driving up from Singapore or KL.

Is The Prestige Hotel Penang Worth It?

Yes, if you want a clean, comfortable base and plan to explore George Town on foot. On a budget, we've also stayed at Chulia Mansion on Chulia Street, though that was back in 2017 (see our Penang itinerary). If you'd rather be by the beach, read our Angsana Teluk Bahang review, as that's a very different kind of stay on the quieter side of the island.

Don't forget travel insurance. We never travel without it. A delayed flight, lost luggage or a trip to a clinic overseas can cost far more than the policy. Before every trip, I compare plans on SingSaver to see the main insurers' coverage and prices side by side. SingSaver often gives rewards like cash or vouchers when you buy through them, so check the current promotion before you pay.
