Updated October 2026
The best 1-day Johor Bahru itinerary sticks to one or two areas: the city centre (Jalan Dhoby), Pelangi/Taman Sentosa near KSL, or Mount Austin. Below are our favourite places to eat, shop and stay in each, from visiting JB every few months for more than a decade, plus how to beat the Causeway jam.
H and I used to visit JB once a year; now it's every few months. A JB trip always ends with a good meal and a massage, and with new malls and bubble tea shops opening every quarter, there's always something new. Bookmark this page: I update it by area whenever we try somewhere new.

Before You Go: Tickets, Data and When to Avoid JB
Book your train ticket early
Free and easy is fun, but to make the most of a day in JB, plan ahead. Buy your KTM Shuttle Tebrau ticket in advance to skip the weekend jam: weekend tickets sell out fast, and faster fingers win. Once the RTS Link opens (targeted for December 2026 to January 2027; fares not yet announced), it'll be the quickest way across. For all the options, read how to get from Singapore to Johor Bahru.
Book your massage in advance too, as the popular places are fully booked at weekends. We usually go to Thai Odyssey because the standard is consistent.
Know when NOT to go
The Causeway jam is no joke. On one long weekend, we left at 5am and still queued about 3 hours. If you must travel on a long weekend, set off very early, or go on a weekday.
Mobile data
Data lets you find highly rated restaurants and get around without getting lost. We used to buy the RM10 Hotlink SIM, but it kept expiring before we could top up. Now we simply add a Malaysia roaming plan from our Singapore telco, which is the easiest option for a day trip. If you visit JB often, a local prepaid SIM is still cheaper; note that not every phone shop stocks the cheapest packs.
Tip: pay with a card that has low overseas fees and earns rewards on ringgit spend. See our guide to the best credit cards for overseas spending.
Stick to one or two areas
Driving around JB is easy, but to make the most of a day trip, stay within one or two areas. Below, we've grouped things to do, malls, food and hotels by area. After all, you braved the jam to enjoy the day!
Area 1: Bandar Johor Bahru / Jalan Dhoby (City Centre)
Right after immigration, you're in Bandar Johor Bahru, the old city centre around JB Sentral. It's perfect for first-timers and anyone who doesn't want to go far. You can even explore on foot without data: just load your map before you cross.
Shopping: City Square Mall
City Square sits right in front of immigration, so it's the mall Singaporeans visit most. Expect Uniqlo, Daiso, Sephora, H&M and more. It's perfect if you just want a movie, a massage and lunch. First time in JB? Start here.
Where to eat in Bandar JB
Cafés along Jalan Wong Ah Fook. This street was busier before the immigration route changed; today it's lined with cafés, hit and miss. Skip Flower in the Window: not worth the calories or the price.
The Replacement – Lodge & Kitchen
Inspired by Melbourne's café scene, The Replacement opened in 2015 and became the big brother of JB's café scene. The interior is simple and homely, the coffee is award-winning, and the food is good quality too.
- Address: 33 Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000
- Hours: Daily 10am–6pm (check ahead, as hours have varied)
Hiap Joo Banana Cake (协裕)
Hiap Joo's wood-fired banana cake: try one before you buy in bulk.
This old-school banana cake is baked in a wood-fired oven, so it's moist, soft and very popular with Singaporeans. It makes a great gift too. To be honest, quality varies from day to day, so buy one and taste it before buying in bulk.
- Address: 13 Jalan Tan Hiok Nee, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000
- Hours: Mon–Sat 7:30am–4:30pm, closed Sunday. It often sells out before closing, so go early.
It Roo Café: famous chicken chop
One of the best chicken chops in Johor. The fried version is crispy with tender meat, but my favourite is the grilled chicken chop: grilled to perfection, with a great sauce.
- Address: 17 Jalan Dhoby, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000
- Hours: Daily 12pm–9:30pm
Kam Long Curry Fish Head (金龍咖哩魚頭)
Curry fish head fans will love this claypot of fish head and cabbage, which needs many bowls of rice. Go on a weekday to avoid the long queue.
- Address: 74 Jalan Wong Ah Fook, Bandar Johor Bahru, 80000
- Hours: 8am–3:30pm, closed Monday
Things to do: Zoo Johor and the night market
Zoo Johor is one of the oldest zoos in Malaysia, with over 100 animal species. Foreign visitors pay RM30 (Malaysians RM10), and it's closed on Tuesdays. There's also a Night Zoo on Friday to Sunday, 8pm–11pm (last entry 10pm), which opened in March 2026. Bring water: it's hot in the day.
- Address: Jalan Dato Jaafar, Taman Dato Onn, 80350 Johor Bahru
- Tickets: at the gate or online at zootiket.johor.gov.my (prices correct as of October 2026)
Bazar Karat night market on a Saturday night, still packed at 10pm.
Bazar Karat Pasar Malam. We stumbled on this night market when we decided to stay the night last-minute. "Karat" means second-hand, but most of what we saw was new, from fashion to household items, with food too. It was still crowded at 10pm on a Saturday. Fun to explore, though we probably won't go back.
- Location: Jalan Segget, Bandar Johor Bahru
- Hours: 6pm–12am, closed Friday
Where to stay in Bandar JB
DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Bahru is our top pick for a night in JB: clean, comfortable rooms and those famous cookies, plus a free upgrade with Hilton Honors Gold. The only downside is location, but Grab makes it easy. Read our DoubleTree JB review.
Amari Johor Bahru has one of the best locations: you can walk from immigration. Rooms are minimal for the price, so book it when location is your priority. Read our Amari JB review.
Swiss-Inn Johor Bahru was our last-minute stay. The location isn't ideal, but rooms are clean and comfortable, and it's great value. Grab is the best way to get around from here.

Area 2: Pelangi / Taman Sentosa / Tebrau Jaya (near KSL)
Long before GPS and data roaming, Taman Sentosa was the area we visited most as kids. Today it's the place for local food and late-night eats. Skip the wanton noodle and abalone noodle shops aimed at Singaporeans: they're overpriced, and you can get great wanton mee anywhere in Malaysia. The real finds are hidden around the area, and bak kut teh is my favourite.
Where to eat near KSL and Taman Sentosa
Ah Soon Bak Kut Teh (亞顺肉骨茶)
My favourite bak kut teh in JB: delicious soup and really good service. Don't confuse it with the different shop opposite KSL!
- Address: 141 Jalan Keris 1, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80500
- Hours: Daily 8am–4pm, closed Monday
Korean Family Restaurant
Our favourite Korean restaurant in JB, with authentic dishes and great banchan. Order the seafood pancake: crispy and loaded with ingredients. It is still one of our favourite Korean Restaurant in JB today.
- Address: 185 Jalan Sri Pelangi, Taman Pelangi, 80400
- Hours: Daily 12pm–11pm
Yu Kee XO Roast Meat Restaurant
Roast duck and char siew hanging at Yu Kee, plus the dishes we ordered.
There are a few Yu Kee outlets in JB, and we're glad one opened near KSL. The stars are the roast meat and char siew. Go early: a few times we arrived at night and everything was sold out.
- Address: 8 Jalan Serigala, Taman Century, 80250
- Hours: Daily 10:30am–9pm
Restaurant Teck Sing
Come for the 纸包鸡 (paper-wrapped herbal chicken). Other stars include herbal drunken prawns and garlic eggplant. A great option for a Chinese sit-down dinner.
- Address: 3 & 5 Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Sentosa, 80150
- Hours: Daily 11am–9pm
深夜食糖 SYST: dessert until 2am
After dinner, head to SYST for traditional desserts in a nostalgic Hong Kong cha chaan teng setting. My sesame paste was smooth and not too sweet. The food is average, but the ambience is great, and it's open until 2am.
- Address: Holiday Villa, 1st Floor Shop 25, 260 Jalan Dato Sulaiman, Taman Abad, 80250
- Hours: Daily 3pm–2am
Shopping near Pelangi

KSL City Mall is the mall H and I visit most: close to immigration, with a supermarket, cinema and massage places. Not the cheapest, but you can get almost everything, and there's lots of good food around it.
KSL Monday night market: every Monday, 5:30pm–8:30pm, outside KSL. From muah chee to fried carrot cake, it's nostalgic and you'll be spoilt for choice.
Pelangi Plaza was a hit in the 1990s; my mum still talks about shopping trips there with my aunt. It's lost its charm even after a revamp, and the supermarket prices are close to Singapore's. Skip it.
Giant Hypermarket, Pelangi Leisure Mall is good for stocking up on household items, with reasonable prices and a wide range, and it's one of the supermarkets closest to immigration. Address: 1.01 Pelangi Leisure Mall, Jalan Serampang, Taman Pelangi, 80050.
Where to stay near KSL
Novotel Johor Bahru, one of JB's newest hotels (opened December 2025), is about a 3-minute walk to KSL and lots of eateries. Read our Novotel JB review or check Novotel JB rates →
KSL Hotel & Resort is right next to KSL mall, the best location for the mall and the Monday night market. Kids can use the play area for free. It's dated, but the location is hard to beat.
Holiday Villa Johor Bahru gets good feedback for comfort and cleanliness, and has a stunning infinity pool. It's on the pricier side.
Bliss Boutique Hotel was the first hotel I stayed at in JB. It's no-frills but clean and simple, near Taman Sentosa's dinner and supper spots. Worth the price.

Area 3: Mount Austin / Taman Desa Tebrau
Mount Austin is JB's lively, hip area, full of pretty cafés and Instagram-worthy restaurants. When we asked a Grab driver where locals go to unwind, his answer was Mount Austin. For our latest picks, see where to eat in Mount Austin.
Restoran Gim Cheng Dim Sum (锦成茶楼)
Still a great dim sum place, with a wide range. We love the steamed yong tau foo-style dim sum and the egg tarts. It's very crowded at weekends, so go early. Read our Gim Cheng review.
- Address: 2, Jalan Sagu 36, Taman Daya, 81100
- Hours: Daily 7am–1pm, closed Wednesday
People & Places Café
This café shot to fame after Jay Chou visited. The design is Instagram-worthy and the food is good, but portions are small and prices are high. It's packed at weekends, so if you want somewhere to chill, try other Mount Austin cafés.
- Address: 6 Jalan Kencana Emas 2/3, Kawasan Perindustrian Tebrau 3, 81100
- Hours: Sun–Thu 10am–6pm; Fri–Sat 10am–9pm
Mok Mok, Bloom Café
Mok Mok's Mount Austin outlet has a beautiful setting and reasonable prices. The big juicy burger and fried onions are great; skip the desserts. Read our Mok Mok review.
- Address: 87 Jalan Mutiara Emas 2A, Taman Mount Austin, 81100
- Hours: Daily 12pm–11:30pm
Jeju Korean BBQ
Image credit: Jeju Korean BBQ Restaurant
Recommended by our JB friends, Jeju serves up to 15 types of banchan, and the marinated meat is perfect on the grill.
- Address: Jalan Austin Heights 8/7, Taman Mount Austin, 81100
- Hours: Daily 11:30am–10:30pm
Shopping near Mount Austin
AEON Tebrau City. My family came here during school holidays, so it brings back memories. Besides the AEON department store, there's a TGV cinema.
Lotus's Tebrau (formerly Tesco Extra), next to AEON, is a well-stocked hypermarket that's usually slightly cheaper than AEON.
IKEA Tebrau is popular for its prices. If your purchases are worth more than S$100 and you've been away less than 48 hours, you'll pay GST on the excess when you return to Singapore.
Things to do: Austin Heights Water & Adventure Park
Families with kids can spend a whole day here, with water slides and an adventure park for different levels. Check that it's open before you go, as we couldn't confirm its current hours; see funtime.my.
- Address: 71 Jalan Austin Heights 8/1, Taman Mount Austin, 81100
Where to stay in Mount Austin
KSL Hot Spring Resort pairs well with café hopping. It has 308 rooms and an indoor hot spring spa to unwind in after a day of shopping. The spring water is trucked in from Jasin.
Midori Concept Hotel is popular with younger travellers, walking distance to Austin Heights, and surrounded by restaurants and cafés open late.
