2 Day 1-Night Trip to Johor Bahru (May 2023)

Last month, we decide to do an impromptu overnight trip to Johor Bahru as it has been almost a year since we visited the city. Instead of exploring many places, we decided to keep it simple and spend our time at Mid Valley South key as it has most of the shops that I wanted to get stuff from.

Day 1 in Johor Bahru

Take a train from Singapore to Johor Bahru

The easiest way to get to Johor Bahru via public transport is by taking the train! It is a convenient and comfortable mode of transportation. You can check for tickets via this link. Otherwise, taking a public bus can be done easily too! Just try to avoid peak season/timing

Getting from Singapore to Johor Bahru

Purchase a Sim Card: Upon arrival, get a local Sim card at Citysquare to ensure seamless communication and internet access throughout your trip. Otherwise, you can purchase a 1 Day plan from your local telco for convenience.

Take a Grab Car to Mid Valley Southkey

Take a Grab ride to Mid Valley Southkey, a popular megamall that opened its doors on 23rd April 2019. Spanning across five floors and occupying a 5.5-hectare site, the mall boasts over 500 stores featuring a mix of international and local brands, as well as various dining options, entertainment facilities, and family-friendly amenities. Enjoy the spacious environment and the opportunity to shop for international brands at favorable exchange rates.

The tenant mix is pretty much like the ones you see in Singapore. Boutique shops like the ones in KSL and supermarkets are not available. If you like big brands and are less crowded, this mall is for you.

Lunch at Jang Won BBQ

Indulge in a satisfying lunch at Jang Won BBQ, a modern and stylish Korean barbecue restaurant. While their BBQ sets are enticing, the kimchi stew stir fry pork are also recommended.

The kimchi stew offers a rich flavor without being overly spicy, and the lunch set provides value for money. The perfectly cooked and marinated pork slices are a highlight, while the side dishes, although served in small portions, are refillable. Unfortunately, the pancake may fall short of expectation. We will be back to try the BBQ next round

Opening Hours Daily: 11am - 11pm

Coffee break at Zus Coffee

Take a break at Zus Coffee, a popular cafe chain known for its unique coffee blends. Alongside a wide selection of coffee, they offer tea, smoothies, milkshakes, pastries, and light meals. Enjoy their delicious beverages, such as the Viet-Spanish ice coffee, and take advantage of any ongoing promotions via their app.

Check-in at DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel

In the late afternoon, check into the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel, a comfortable and clean accommodation option. Although the famous warm cookies may have decreased in size due to inflation, the overall stay promises a pleasant experience.

Pamper Yourself at Thai Odyssey

We visited Thai Odyssey, a renowned chain of traditional Thai massage and spa centers, for a rejuvenating and authentic Thai massage. The consistent quality of their services over the years makes them a reliable choice.

Dinner at Shu Da Xia Hotpot

For dinner, head to Shu Da Xia Hotpot located in Sutera. The restaurant's unique martial arts theme adds a touch of cuteness to the ambiance. We tried several soup base and the chicken was our favourite! Plus, the high-quality meats and attentive staff make for an enjoyable dining experience. The interior design is fun and quirky too! Do note that reservation is highly recommended! We visited on a weekday night and was lucky to have seat despite being almost full house.

Do drop by the sutera mall which is just minutes walk away!
